Guide
The Second Coil of Bahamut, also known as SCoB is the second end-game raid in FFXIV: A Realm Reborn. You gain access to this upon completion of The Binding Coil of Bahamut Turn 5 and the quest that follows. You will then be able to pick up the quest “Another Turn in the Coil” from Urianger in The Waking Sands (X:6, Y:4). This will take you to North Shroud where you will find the entrance to the Second Coil. Turn 1 of SCoB is also referred to Turn 6 by the players to differentiate between it and Turn 1 of the Binding Coil.
First Steps and Preparation
In the first part of the turn you will have some trash monsters with an aether crystal that you need to destroy in order to proceed. This then takes you to another just like it, and then you will be able to encounter Rafflesia – the boss of this turn. She is a giant ochu that can summon bulbs and bees to her aid.
The fight does not require any special party setups and the standard 2 tank, 2 healers and 4 DPS setup will do. Depending on the strategy you use it can be helpful to have at least one melee DPS for the single target LB3. There are generally two main strategies before phase 3 and two afterwards. Both will be explained in the guide.
Phase 1
In phase 1 you will encounter a mechanic called Thorn Whip, which attaches a tether between two players. Later on this can attach tethers between three or four players. To break the tether the people chained together must run far enough apart from each other.
The other mechanic in the phase involves the bulbs that you see spawning. Rafflesia will use an attack called Floral Trap which places a yellow orb above a player’s head. This signals that Rafflesia is about to use a cone attack in their direction and eat any player caught in it, including the player with Floral Trap. There are two ways of dealing with this.
One is called the line of sight (LOS) strategy where the player with the yellow orb will run infront of the boss and then quickly run through her just as she is about to eat the player. The tank should move to the rest of the group to avoid being eaten. This strategy is used by a lot of PUGs because it is deemed easier.
The other way to deal with the mechanic is probably the one that the developers intended us to use. It involves the bulbs that spawn and the briar patches they leave behind. Being in one of these patches prevents the player from being eaten so the idea is that the player with the yellow orb (Floral Trap) moves into a patch until the Floral Trap debuff disappears. Everyone else should move to the opposite side of Rafflesia to avoid being sucked in.
Being sucked in will not kill you, however it will add a damage increase stack to the boss for every player eaten. Once you reach four or more the fight becomes very difficult to heal through and a wipe is almost inevitable.
Regarding the bulb adds, you do not need to kill them but as you should aim to tank Rafflesia in the middle of the room you should kill any bulb that spawns there on top of her as quickly as possible. While the briar patches provide safety from being eaten they do deal damage over time and reduce movement speed so the group doesn’t want to be caught in one. That plus a tether link can kill a player.
Phase 2
Phase 2 begins at 80% and has all of the mechanics from phase 1 as well as two new mechanics.
One is a simple mechanic to test your alertness. The boss will cast an action called Blighted Boutique. If you are attacking, moving, healing or doing anything when this goes off it will one shot you. So simply focus target the boss and stop doing everything when you see this. This includes auto attack, so be careful.
The other mechanic is more complex. It starts with Rafflesia casting Honey on a random player. A bee will then spawn and be attracted to this player. The bee’s attacks are weak but if it is alive too long it will use Final sting to one shot players. While the bee is up you will likely have to deal with a Blighted Boutique, which is why focus targeting the main boss helps. Once the bee is dead the player with Honey needs to get eaten by Rafflesia’s Floral Trap attack in order to remove the debuff. If this does not happen then bees will keep spawning and be attracted to this player.
To get eaten you just ensure that you are standing in the cone pointed at the player with the yellow orb, and not in a briar patch. If DPS is high enough you can push to phase 3 without seeing a second bee, however if you do get a second it is important to not push the boss into phase 3 (40%) until the player has been eaten.
Phase 3
Phase 3 is very different to the rest of the fight. Rafflesia loses the ability to eat people using Floral Trap, loses Blighted Boutique and stops casting Honey. Players with Honey can still summon bees and since they can’t be eaten in this phase that is why you should avoid entering the phase with a player who has the Honey debuff. If you do the player with Honey needs to die otherwise the fight will become very difficult with constantly spawning bees.
Rafflesia does however use some new mechanics. Shortly after the phase change she will use Leaf Storm, which is a raidwide AoE. Next she will summon three slugs and three slimes. The three slugs will shortly use Acid Rain, which is a simple circular AoE to move out of. Here is where you now have two strategies as to how you complete the fight. It really depends on how good your DPS is.
Generally if you have the DPS to see one bee in phase 2 you will have the DPS to use the “burn” strategy. This is where the off tank takes the slugs to a corner and everyone focuses on taking Rafflesia down as quickly as possible before the next set of slugs spawn. In this strategy you don’t touch the adds.
If you are just learning the fight it is likely that you will instead be using what is called the “super slug” strategy. In this strategy you need to DPS one slug to around half health and let the slug eat the three slimes. This will massively increase its strength so it has to be killed quickly, and this is where a melee LB3 helps. Afterwards take out the remaining two slugs and then focus on the boss.
The other new mechanic in this phase is called Laser, which is a straight line beam from the boss in a single player’s direction. This is unavoidable for that player and the damage is high enough to kill them. So the idea is that everyone is in line with the beam as the damage will be split between everyone it hits.
You will also have to deal with a four way Thorn Whip in this phase where a player is chained to three other players. Ideally the player that is the centre of these tethers should be the one running to break them, usually by running forwards but the other three players can help by running backwards.
If you see a second set of slugs it is better to just have the off tank keep them to the side as Rafflesia should be nearly dead by this point. If she isn’t then you have a DPS issue somewhere, either too many people dying or people not playing their jobs well enough.
